Higher Education Showcase Page
I chose Postsecondary Leadership as one of my concentrations for my Masters degree program. The majority of courses I took revolved around adult learners and higher education. The other courses fell into my Sports Leadership concentration. I love working in higher education and see a unique opportunity to work with college students and staff. Being in college is a transition period in life as students get more serious about future career goals and interests. I see it as a mentoring and responsibility shift from staff and faculty to the students as they begin to take on more responsibility for their learning and growth. It is also an opportunity to empower staff to do the best they can in working with students. Listed below are specific areas I enjoy within the Higher Education setting, and links to examples of work within those areas.
Context of Learning
One concept I learned a lot about through my program is the different contexts in which we learn. We learn in the traditional education setting, but also at work, through others, etc. Seeing school as a first organization of learning allows us to discover how we best learn and apply it to the different learning environments in our lives. Leadership
Teachers and managers must decide how they want to lead their students or team. It is important to discover your own philosophy on leading and how that will impact those around you. In working as an Admissions Team Leader, I began to discover my own strengths and weaknesses in a leadership position. Skills of a Leader Leadership Approaches |
Shift in Responsibility
One of the most crucial responsibilities I see in education and in leadership is getting your students or staff to be intentional about their own learning. When they see learning as important and take ownership of it, different motivation occurs and the leader becomes more of a facilitator. Self-directed learning occurs. The Role of Education
To students, education can mean something different. We all have something that drives us to learn, and as educators and leaders we have the opportunity to create an environment to foster learning. The series of essays below address key issues with adult learners today, and what role education plays in our lives. Education and the Learner |
